Golmajerias is the old Arabic name for sweets and although most of Spain was Muslim for some 700 years, northern Spain was a stronghold of christianity. So it is interesting that even here in La Rioja the name for sweets is Golmajerias and two typical dishes contain almendras (almonds). Any Spanish word beginning with "al" can be assumed to be Arabic (such as Alvarez, Alberto, Alvarado, and even Guadalajara - wadii al-Hajara). Spain and its Arabic heritage is fascinating.
Hosteria Alesanco describes in translated Spanish many of the typical dishes of La Rioja, including the two below: Fardelejos (which I have mentioned before) and Mazapanes.

If you walk 19 miles per day you can eat all the sweets (or anything else) you want. My friend Nancy says that's one of the great things about her bicycling trips. Penny
